REVOLUTIONISING CRISIS CARE AT CRANNÓG NUA

Innovative, child-centred interventions reduce restraints by 57.5%, enhance staff safety, and redefine compassionate support for young people in crisis.

At Crannóg Nua Special Care Unit in Dublin, the introduction of Safety Pods has revolutionised the way young people in crisis are supported, highlighting their role as crucial tools in safe and compassionate care. Medically approved, Safety Pods provide a secure and dignified method of restraint when necessary, offering an alternative to traditional physical interventions. This innovative approach places the safety, well-being, and comfort of young people aged 11–17 at the forefront, transforming the environment into one where crises can be managed with care rather than coercion.

The impact has been striking. Within six months of the pilot, the unit recorded a 57.5% reduction in restraints, proving that Safety Pods are not merely an alternative—”they are a highly effective intervention that protects both staff and young people”. No injuries were reported during Safety Pod use, and staff absences due to restraint-related incidents plummeted from 230 days the previous year to just 12, demonstrating the profound effect on workplace safety and morale. Feedback from young people, staff, and families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising Safety Pods as safer, more comfortable, and far more child-centred than traditional methods.

The success of Safety Pods is rooted not only in their design but in thoughtful implementation. Staff received hands-on training using real-life scenarios, ensuring that each intervention is handled safely and respectfully. Meanwhile, young people are encouraged to engage with the Safety Pods in daily routines, normalising their presence and making them familiar, reassuring fixtures in their environment.

Beyond immediate safety, Safety Pods advance the strategic objectives of Tusla, reinforcing its commitment to enhancing care experiences, improving outcomes, and strengthening the capacity of Special Care Units. By providing a safer, more supportive environment, they also contribute to staff retention and recruitment, helping ensure that high-quality care is sustainable.

The introduction of Safety Pods demonstrates that it is possible to manage challenging situations without compromising safety, dignity, or well-being. They are not just a tool- they are a lifeline, a proactive measure that transforms crisis management into compassionate care. The positive outcomes of the pilot suggest that broader implementation across other Special Care Units could redefine standards of care nationwide, cementing Safety Pods as indispensable resources in supporting young people through their most difficult moments.
